Ep. 302 – Should Diabetes Medications Be Used to Prevent Diseases Like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s?

Happy Monday Train Your Brain Podcast listeners! Today we are going to discuss a controversial new treatment plan for the prevention of diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Doctor Trayford explains that doctors are now prescribing diabetes medications as a way for regulating blood sugar in the brain which is usually linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Episodes 92, 99, 106 and 121 are on blood sugar so feel free to go back and give those episodes a listen so that you can more fully understand the effects of blood sugar on the brain. Dr. Trayford has taught us that fuel to the brain is important. Though, instead of regulating blood sugar through medication, it would be optimal to first turn to lifestyle improvements. There is a time and a place for most interventions. So, talk to your doctor.

The tip for today is to skip the carbs on the buffet line. Load up on veggies and protein instead and save your brain from a blood sugar trip. Thanks for listening!

Train Your Brain Podcast logo

Train Your Brain Podcast brings you tip number 299. Today’s brain training tip is a great little exercise that you can do with your eyes. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and at arms’ length in front of you hold a piece of paper with a dot on it at eye level. Slowly move your head from side to side, but don’t take your eyes off of the dot. This helps the brain to learn to keep its eye on a target and navigate its environment. Thanks for listening!

Your Brain Training coach Dr. Trayford is bringing you tip number 298 today. This is a topic we’ve been hearing a lot about. Of course nutrition is a highly controversial subject, but Dr. Trayford likes to sift through the arguments on both sides and share the facts. Grass fed cows have the appropriate fats and proteins that provide us with the nutrients and proteins that we need. The meat will contain better fats: less saturated fat and more essential fatty acids. Making this switch will allow you to not need to take extra supplements. Thanks for listening!

Ep. 295 – Dementia Biomarkers Part 3

Happy Monday to our Train Your Brain Podcast listeners! Today we are going to continue our conversation the Biomarkers for Dementia with Part 3. The more markers we have the better we can predict how a person’s brain is working and what can be done to push it in the right direction.

There is no stand-alone test to see if someone has Dementia, but a good Functional Neurologist can test you complex attention skills. That assesses you ability to respond to stimulation over a longer period of time.

The tip for today is to go beyond the MMSE (Mini Mental Status Evaluation). Get your cognitive functions tested, verbal memory, visual memory, composite memory ,cognitive flexibility, complex attention and executive function. Anything that you can capture as a measure of where you are right now is going to be critical to compare your future brain function against, and if doctors can detect mental decline now they can intervene and save you precious years of cognitive function!
