Ep. 302 – Should Diabetes Medications Be Used to Prevent Diseases Like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s?

Happy Monday Train Your Brain Podcast listeners! Today we are going to discuss a controversial new treatment plan for the prevention of diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Doctor Trayford explains that doctors are now prescribing diabetes medications as a way for regulating blood sugar in the brain which is usually linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Episodes 92, 99, 106 and 121 are on blood sugar so feel free to go back and give those episodes a listen so that you can more fully understand the effects of blood sugar on the brain. Dr. Trayford has taught us that fuel to the brain is important. Though, instead of regulating blood sugar through medication, it would be optimal to first turn to lifestyle improvements. There is a time and a place for most interventions. So, talk to your doctor.

The tip for today is to skip the carbs on the buffet line. Load up on veggies and protein instead and save your brain from a blood sugar trip. Thanks for listening!

Dr. Trayford strongly advises against cramming the night before at the expense of good sleep. You simply won’t be able to retain or efficiently use what you’ve crammed if you didn’t get a good night’s sleep. Today Dr. Trayford shares brain training tip 126: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. What a mouth-full! The MTHFR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme plays a role in processing amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase is important for a chemical reaction involving forms of the vitamin folate (also called vitamin B9). Specifically, this enzyme converts a molecule called 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to a molecule called 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. This reaction is required for the multistep process that converts the amino acid homocysteine to another amino acid, methionine. The body uses methionine to make proteins and other important compounds. Mutations in this gene are linked to numerous cardiovascular and neurological conditions and can be easily treated with appropriate nutritional intervention. Thanks for listening!

If your answer is that you push the snooze button, then you might want to rethink that move. Dr. Trayford recommends placing your alarm clock across the room so that you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Actually as you set a consistent sleep cycle, then you eventually may not need an alarm clock, but if you still do use an alarm clock then getting up when it goes off will ensure that your last few minutes of sleep in the morning aren’t interrupted.
