Train Your Brain Podcast logo

Do you remember playing this game as a kid? It’s a great brain exercise! If you’re not familiar with the game we’ll describe it for you. You have several cards that include pairs of two. Mix them up, turn them over and then you take turns choosing two cards to turn over to view and then turn back upside down. The object is to remember where the cards are and find matches. This game works an aspect of your short term memory. Your brain holds on to little bits of information while you acquire new information. Thanks for listening!

Ep. 302 – Should Diabetes Medications Be Used to Prevent Diseases Like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s?

Happy Monday Train Your Brain Podcast listeners! Today we are going to discuss a controversial new treatment plan for the prevention of diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Doctor Trayford explains that doctors are now prescribing diabetes medications as a way for regulating blood sugar in the brain which is usually linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Episodes 92, 99, 106 and 121 are on blood sugar so feel free to go back and give those episodes a listen so that you can more fully understand the effects of blood sugar on the brain. Dr. Trayford has taught us that fuel to the brain is important. Though, instead of regulating blood sugar through medication, it would be optimal to first turn to lifestyle improvements. There is a time and a place for most interventions. So, talk to your doctor.

The tip for today is to skip the carbs on the buffet line. Load up on veggies and protein instead and save your brain from a blood sugar trip. Thanks for listening!

Ep. 295 – Dementia Biomarkers Part 3

Happy Monday to our Train Your Brain Podcast listeners! Today we are going to continue our conversation the Biomarkers for Dementia with Part 3. The more markers we have the better we can predict how a person’s brain is working and what can be done to push it in the right direction.

There is no stand-alone test to see if someone has Dementia, but a good Functional Neurologist can test you complex attention skills. That assesses you ability to respond to stimulation over a longer period of time.

The tip for today is to go beyond the MMSE (Mini Mental Status Evaluation). Get your cognitive functions tested, verbal memory, visual memory, composite memory ,cognitive flexibility, complex attention and executive function. Anything that you can capture as a measure of where you are right now is going to be critical to compare your future brain function against, and if doctors can detect mental decline now they can intervene and save you precious years of cognitive function!

Ep. 288 – Dementia Biomarkers Part 2

Happy Monday to our Train Your Brain Podcast listeners! Today we are going to continue our conversation the Biomarkers for Dementia. The more markers we have the better we can predict how a person’s brain is working and what can be done to push it in the right direction. One marker that we are looking at is a person’s sense of smell. One’s sense of smell can start to go away before things start to break down in the brain, so it is a good indicator.

There are a few reasons smell loss occurs:
1. Certain medications
2. Certain infections
3. Injury to the smell system – most commonly in concussion-type injuries.

Smell tests can be done to see how far away a person can smell and how accurate they are at identifying smells.

Research shows that adults with impaired smells were over 2 times as likely to develop memory problems. You can also get diagnostic imaging of your brain done. So, if you’ve noticed not being able to smell very well then definitely get your sense of smell checked! Thanks for tuning in!

Biomarkers for Dementia are very similar to those for concussions. They both relate to memory, attention and physical cues. We can observe things like balance, gait and sit to stand testing to tell how physically fit an individual is. We have long since established that being physically fit helps you to have a better brain. Increased mobility and increased fitness lead to increased cognitive function. Therefore poor balance can be a big indicator of Dementia. Please make sure that your loved ones see a physician if you suspect dementia biomarkers are becoming a concern. Thanks for tuning in!

Ep. 253 – Dementia: Many Causes, Many Symptoms

Happy Monday morning dear listeners! Dr. Trayford shares a very important topic with us in episode 253 of the podcast today. We’re talking about Dementia and the many causes and and symptoms that accompany this disease. Some of the known causes of Dementia are metabolic problems, alcoholism, hits to the head and vascular problems.

We’re all pretty familiar with the symptoms of Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, but the important thing to note here is that Dementia is not a normal part of the aging process. Healthy aging includes the retention of mental capacity and memory even into very late years. So, if you notice decline in yourself or loved ones, timely intervention can make a huge difference. Here are some helpful resources:

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

Dementia Society of America

The tip for today, tip number 253 is to get a Mini Mental State Examination or an MMSE. Diagnosis of Dementia cannot simply occur during a 15 appointment with a health care provider. The symptoms need to be tracked and a doctor must watch a patient carefully to notice the signs as the patient will have natural developed covers for their behavior and memory. Thanks for listening!
